  • HOW OFTEN WILL MY CHIMNEY/FLUE NEED SWEEPING?

Frequency will depend on a number of factors which include the type of fuel used, appliance, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, and the type of chimney you have. We will be able to advise on the sweeping frequency during the appointment.  The sweeping frequencies below are for guidance purposes only:-

Smokeless fuel: At least once a year

Wood: Quarterly when in use

Bituminous coal: Quarterly when in use

Oil: Once a year

Gas: Once a year

  • Why do I need to have my chimney / flue swept?

Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gases.  Regular sweeping will remove soot, bird nests, cobwebs and any other blockages.  It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerous chimney fires.  Chimney Sweeping will also increase the efficiency of some appliances.

  • Will having my Chimney Swept make a mess?

Flemings Chimney Sweeps are very mindful and conscious of making as little mess as possible, and are in fact trained in the prevention of dust escaping during sweeping.  However, there are exceptional circumstances e.g. if a chimney may be blocked with a birds nest, which makes it difficult to guaranteed that no mess will be made.

  • I’ve just moved house – do I need to have my chimney cleaned?

Yes, as you may not necessarily know when it was last cleaned properly by a professional Chimney Sweep

  • Why are there smoke marks just above the fireplace?

This may be caused by smoke leaking back into the room; call Flemings Chimney Sweep on 07827 704525 to seek advice as soon as possible.

  •  Can you help with birds nests?

A Birds nest are all part of a chimney sweeps work.

However

there are rules regarding the removal of a nest which is known to have eggs or chicks in and the birds are actively nesting.

We will refuse to remove a nest if this is the case

so between late Feb/March and August, be extra vigilant. If you know birds are building a nest CALL US EARLY before nesting properly gets underway. Jackdaws (the only birds to build nests in chimneys) can be seen taking an interest quite early in the year.

If you call us early enough we will be happy to remove the nest BUT PLEASE NOTE that

no-one can physically stop Jackdaws nesting in chimneys. If we sweep it and they come back again within a few days they will VERY QUICKLY build another nest.

The only answer is to have a suitable cowl which stops them getting into the chimney in the first place. A one off payment for a good cowl is MUCH cheaper than several calls to the Chimney Sweep!!
